We are often taught to think of health as something that can be measured: a number on a scale, a result in a chart, the years we hope to add to a life. But some of the things that sustain us most cannot be measured so easily.
A meal shared with people we love. A walk that returns us to ourselves. The courage to begin again. The small rituals that give shape to our days. Health is not only about living longer. It is also about being fully present for the life we are living.
I’m Sarah Gillis, a board-certified endocrinologist and internist, writer, gardener, and mother of four. I created The Fresh Food Physician to explore the place where science meets the soul of everyday life—through food, movement, family, purpose, wonder, and the choices that slowly become a life.
I write a weekly column for the Dayton Daily News. Here, you’ll find those essays and an invitation to notice more closely, live more intentionally, and discover the extraordinary hiding in plain sight.
